Whiplash

Available therapies

Whiplash injuries are often caused by car or sporting accident but may also be caused by trips or falls; they involve a soft tissue injury of the neck. When they happen as a result of a road traffic accident they may often involve a facet joint injury too.  They occur when the neck is suddenly jerked into hypertension.

The soft tissue injury may include:

  • Tears in the muscle tissue of the Trapezious and  Levator Scpulea,
  • Damage of the Anterior Longitudinal Ligament
  • Disc problems (occasionally)
  • The braichial plexus goes through the Trapesious and may also be affected

Because it is a soft tissue injury X-rays do not show signs of whiplash .

Symptoms include:

  • Pain n neck
  • Headaches up the back of the skull
  • Eyestrain
  • Poor memory and loss of concentration
  • Depression
  • Dizzyness
  • Blurred vision
  • Numbness down the arm (parathesia)
  • Lack of grip
  • Waking up tired
  • Restlessness in bed, unable to find comfortable position
  • Lack of rotation on head
  • Head shunted forward
  • Kyphosis may persist years after the injury
  • Toe pressure on shoewear

Conventional treatments for Whiplash include:
  • Icepack immediately after the injury has happened
  • Painkillers, anti-inflammatory painkillers or muscle relaxants
  • Exercise
  • People are NO longer advised to use a neck collar as is is now known that whiplash will heal more quickly if the muscles are kept active

In rare cases neck pain may persist for a year or longer and conventional medicine offers no form of treatment that is of value. Analgesics may be given to reduce pain and physiotherapy can offer some relief but in the words of a textbook. “Patients need to be encouraged to bear the discomfort until the symptoms subside. However, be warned: over 10 per cent of patients have some residual discomfort lasting indefinitely.”

Complementary Treatments for Whiplash include:

  • Neuro-skeletal Re-alignmentgentle non-manipulative treatment which can be outstandingly successful with whiplash injuries. The sooner the treatment is comenced after receiving the injury the faster healing will be.
  • Remedial massage – massage is helpful in short term pain relief but remedial or sports massage can be particularly beneficial in helping to bring muscles out of spasm.
  • Acupuncture – used to relieve pain
